So having started level 1 City and Guilds Photography class last week, I am forced into creating a blog. Frustrated with it last week as it didn't make sense having never done one before. However I have uploaded 4 photographs from our first task. The task was to take 4 photographs at 4 different times of the day. For this task auto setting could be used on the camera.
Speaking of cameras... I have been fortunate to be offered the loan of a digital SLR Canon 450d. It comes with a 18-200 mm lens on which there is a UV filter which along with providing protection for the lens is for reducing ultra violet light passing through the lens, 2 gb memory card, rechargeable battery and charger and external flash and instruction manual. I am looking forward though to learning how to use the camera off "auto" mode and put basics of photography into practice.
So the first 4 photographs for the light task were rushed. I did not plan time during my week to go out and take 4 photographs so the day before my class (a working day) I took the camera to work and as I was walking into work, I walked past the house in the photos. Due to my lack of planning I had to make do with the light on offer which was not too bad. First thing was sunny and blue sky but this did not last long as my description in the photographs shows.

TASK 1 - PHOTOGRAPH 1 - 8.05 am
8.05 am
This is the first picture of the day. I noticed the house on my way to work and as I was working all day and needed to take all 4 photos, it seemed an obvious choice. It's not an exciting or thrilling picture! The sun is on the side of the house, there is a good smattering of blue sky, there are shadows as well on the side of the house.
TASK 1 - PHOTOGRAPH 4 - 10.10 pm
10.10 pm
Having left work at 5.00 pm I knew I had to return to take the last picture! I went out for the evening and duly returned at 10.10 pm. The only light now is from street lamps and from local buildings. The windows and the wall are visible and if you strain your eyes you can see the outline of the side of the house. I used the camera on auto and not surprisingly the flash kicked it. I did not have an external flash gun.
TASK 1 - PHOTOGRAPH 3 - 5.05 pm
5.05 pm
The motorised scooter had gone! There is no sunlight, there are no shadows on the house, the house seems flat and dull and darker. This picture was shot on Auto and as explained previously, I cannot give the settings as I did not back up the pictures and subsequently lost them. My first lesson learnt about backing up.

About Me
My interest in photography started 20+ years ago when i bought a Pentax K100 SLR camera for £100. I started a college course and learnt how to process black and white film in the darkroom however I didn't finish the course hence me starting this one many years later. I sold my film SLR (regretably) with the intention of replacing it with a digital SLR but have so far only managed a compact digital. I love the fact that I can have my pictures on my computer within minutes of taking them.
I still haven't yet bought a digital SLR; instead I am lucky enough to have been loaned one to do my course. It is a CANON D450 and I am just getting used to it and getting to know the controls. The lens is a 18mm to 200mm. There is one battery only, together with a charger and instruction manual.
My nephews are continuous subject for my photographs together with cows, pigs and anything else I see and think ooh that will make a great picture.
